Every once in a while,  we have the opportunity to drink a special wine and we have fond memories of these moments. But what makes a wine special?

Many would say when the wine taste and aroma is delightful, but think about your special wine memories. Where did it take place? Did it happen in the vineyards of Tuscany,  or a dinner at a Caribbean beach resort, or sharing your wine collection with good friends? I dare say it’s NOT the wine that created the memory but rather the TIME and PLACE which influenced your state of mind. Yes, the wine was probably very good, but GREAT, this might be questionable.

I also have special wine memories of time and place, but then there are truly special wines. They seem to happen when least expected, and last night was one of those moments. It was a cold Saturday night in January, and we hunkered down in our first snowstorm in over a year.

I searched the wine cellar for a bottle to pair with a simple dinner of steak and potatoes – I was thinking Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah, probably California. But I selected Figgins Estate Red 2010, a red blend from a great producer in Washington state. However, my expectation was muted since  this was the last of two bottles and I recall the other bottle disappointing. I opened the bottle one hour before dinner to decant but immediately realized this was special, recorked it and waited for dinner. With dinner, we savored our Special Wine and enjoyed a WOW moment!
