Wild fires may be out of the headlines but they still threaten California wine country in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties.
As of Tuesday the current status was
– over 245,000 acres burned across northern California
– 11,000 firefighters continue battling 12 large fires
– death toll is 41 and over 5,700 structures destroyed
– over 100,000 evacuated and 34,000 remain out of their homes.
Wineries have had difficulty assessing their damage but over 25 wineries report some damage and 7 have extensive (if not total) damage. The effects of “smoke taint” on California wines will last for years and the magic of visiting Napa and Sonoma wine country may never be the same!
