SpaceX’s inaugural flight to the moon will occur in 2018 and 2 tickets are available for $35,000,000 each! Yep, count the zeros – that’s $35M but I’ve already seen the moon?!?
A few years ago we hiked Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe located only 20 miles from bustling tourist city of Catania, Sicily. It was a 3 hour hike from basecamp to reach one of five craters at 11,000 feet elevation and what an incredible ominous experience! A lunar desert of black lava rock, barren without vegetation, the scorching summer heat of Sicily replaced by chilling winds and cold…the moon can’t look different than this!
Not far from this barren wasteland in the foothills surrounding Mt Etna, a handful of winemakers are producing quality red and white wines under the Etna appellation. Vineyards grow on steep slopes at elevations of 1,000 to 4,000 feet – the highest vineyards in Europe. Volcanic soil from centuries of Etna’s eruptions is rich in minerals and Sicily’s climate is ideal for agriculture.

Alta Mora (tall black in Italian) is new winery opened by Cusumano to produce wine from Etna vineyards. Carricante, a native Sicilian grape, grows in vineyards at 1,800 feet above sea level. Alta Mora Etna Bianco is White wine similar to Sauvignon Blanc with great minerality, citrus notes and full body – ideal for pairing with seafood and fresh vegetables.
