Two friends recommended Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon as a solid, consistent wine from Paso Robles. It was every bit of what they said and at $12 a bottle, you can keep a stash of bottles for everyday drinking.

Liberty School is one of five brands produced by Hope Family Wines in Paso Robles, California. In the late 1980’s Hope Farms began selling cabernet grapes to the Wagners of Caymus Vineyards as juice for their second label, Liberty School. Hope Family acquired the Liberty School label in 1995. Liberty School vineyards are in California’s Central Coast, a vast and varied region from Santa Barbara to Monterrey. There are numerous micro-climates within the region, and Paso Robles with warm sunny days and cool nights is similar to Napa’s Rutherford district, the home of outstanding Napa cabs.

LIBERTY SCHOOL Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 (13.5% ABV, $12)

Winery describes the wine as “Ruby black in color, the 2013 Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon displays classic Cabernet aromas of black currant, crushed blackberry and cherry, with undertones of charred sandalwood, black peppercorn, eucalyptus and a dash of cinnamon. On the palate, dark berries, cherry and a hint of toasted oak unfold as the velvety tannins and balancing acidity lead to a long, fruit driven finish.”
